P3O Practitioner Training Courses - non-residential

A P3O (Portfolio, Programme and Project Office) provides a decision enabling and delivery support structure for an organisation.  This 5 day certification course provides an understanding of the P3O model, as defined in OGC best practice guidance and supported by a case study and exercises to apply the guidance to a practical situation. The course includes the P3O Foundation and Practitioner examinations.

Learning Objectives
By the end of the course, delegates will be able to:

  • Describe the high level P3O model and know the differences between Portfolio, Programme and Project Management
  • Know the arguments for establishing a P3O model and measuring its success
  • Define the business case to get senior management approval for the P3O
  • Describe the purpose and major content of all P3O related roles
  • State the key functions and services of a P3O
  • Build the right P3O model to adapt to the organisation’s needs, taking account of its size and Project and Programme Management maturity
  • Plan the implementation of a P3O
  • Describe the tools and techniques used by a P3O and be able to use these in running the P3O and shaping the portfolio of programmes and projects
  • Undertake the Foundation and Practitioner examinations, having practised with sample questions

Examination Structure

P3O Foundation – 40 minute, closed-book, 50 question, multiple choice paper.
P3O Practitioner – 2¼ hour, seven  question, scenario based objective testing exam, restricted open-book (P3O Manual only).     

Who Should Attend/Pre-requisites

This event is suitable for any individual with an interest in managing or working in a component of a P3O. There are no pre-requisites for attendance, however it is recommended that delegates have a basic understanding of portfolio, programme and project management principles. A pass in the Foundation examination is a pre-requisite for taking the Practitioner examination.

This highly interactive and participative course covers the following areas:

  • Course Introduction and Objectives

A chance to familiarise the delegates with the course content, desired outcomes and individual requirements and expectations

  • Examination Overview

Delegates are given details of the structure and content of the Foundation and Practitioner  examinations.  Advice will also be provided on appropriate revision and exam techniques.

  • Overview and Principles

This session will provide the context for a P3O by providing definitions for Portfolios, Programmes and Projects along with how the elements of a P3O model align

  • Why have a P3O?

Selling the benefits of a P3O to senior management is often a difficult task. This session looks at the purpose, elements and key benefits of the P3O Value Matrix and considers the factors to be considered to ensure successful implementation and KPIs for measuring success

  • P3O Models and Tailoring

This session examines the different ways organisations may seek to implement P3O concepts and support processes through physical offices. It also considers the factors to be taken into account when considering the best fit for a specific organisation, and how to apply and tailor the P3O model in line with an organisation’s structure, governance, functions and services

  • P3O Roles

This session identifies the management, generic and functional roles and responsibilities of the P3O staff within the P3O Model, and considers the appropriate selection and allocation of these

  • Implementation and re-energising a P3O

Just as the implementation of a project or programme should follow a lifecycle, so should the implementation of a P3O model.  This session provides a practical, planned approach to implementing a new P3O or re-energising an existing P3O, taking into account the vision of the P3O’s functions and services and organisational maturity

  • P3O Tools and Techniques

There are multiple tools and techniques in use in P3Os.  This session discusses a range of common tools and techniques found in ‘a best in class’ P3O model and examines their practical use in support of a successful P3O organisation

  • P3O Foundation Certificate Exam
